A breathing system or breathing circuit is a medical device used to deliver oxygen, remove carbon dioxide, and deliver inhalational an aesthetic agent to a patient. The ventilator circuit refers to the tubing that connects the ventilator to a patient, as well as any device that is connected to the circuit tubing. The most common devices include heaters and humidifiers, filters, suction catheters, and therapeutic aerosol generators (nebulizers and inhalers). The ventilator circuit is used to deliver gas from a positive pressure ventilator to the patient.

• Inspiratory Limb: Tubing that delivers air/oxygen from the ventilator to the patient.
• Expiratory Limb: Tubing that carries exhaled gases from the patient back to the ventilator.
• Y-Connector: Connects the inspiratory and expiratory limbs to the patient interface.
• Patient Interface: Includes a mask, endotracheal tube, or tracheostomy tube.
• Tubing: Typically made of medical-grade PVC or silicone, which is flexible, durable, and resistant to kinking.
• Connectors: Made of rigid plastic, often polycarbonate, to ensure secure connections.
• Tubing Diameter: Common internal diameters are 15 mm for paediatric circuits and 22 mm for adult circuits & 10mm for neonatal circuit.
• Tubing Length: Typically, between 1.2 to 1.8 meters, but can vary depending on specific requirements.
• Resistance to Flow: Low resistance to ensure minimal work of breathing for the patient.
• Dead Space: Minimized to prevent CO2 rebreathing.
• Compliance: Low compliance to ensure accurate delivery of tidal volumes.
• Leakage: Minimal leakage to maintain efficient ventilation.
• Compatibility: Ensure compatibility with the specific ventilator model being used.
